Kintyre to Ardnamurchan by Clyde Cruising Club

BCCC02

The area covered by this cruising guide stretches northwards from the Mull of Kintyre to the Ardamurchan peninsula, detailing some of the finest cruising grounds to be found anywhere in the world. Within easy reach of all the main harbours and marinas lie an abundance of lochs and islands with numerous idyllic anchorages to explore. Some of these are easy to find, others pose more of a navigational challenge and are accessed via intricate channels using a series of well-described transits, others lie beyond turbulent tidal sounds. All reward with stunning scenery and there is somewhere for everyone, whether on a first-time visit, or a return to familiar waters.

This new edition, updated by Edward Mason, continues the long-respected legacy of CCC publications for cruising sailors. Information on harbours and marinas has been thoroughly revised, and plans have been updated throughout. Several new photographs have been included to help to identify key navigational features as well as to entice further exploration.

Details on plans have been updated with reference to the Imray chart pack for the area (2800 Kintyre to Ardnamurchan). References to Bob Bradfield's useful Antares large scale charts are also included.

Shetland Islands Pilot
£16.96

Shetland Islands Pilot

BIM174
Well known to ancient Norse mariners, the Shetland Islands offer a fascinating cruising ground for today's less warlike sailors. There are numerous beautiful, if sometimes rugged anchorages, many harbours and several marinas all of which create a variety that ensures that one visit to these islands will not be the last. Natural scenery apart, one function of the ongoing drive to attract tourism is a strong appreciation of the benefits brought by visiting yachts, and this, coupled with the natural and very welcoming grace of the Shetland people, ensures a hugely warm welcome. Summer is the time to cruise these islands, one added benefit of their Northern location is the almost constant daylight, making both sightseeing and pilotage much more enjoyable. Summer is also the time when many of the island's towns and villages hold their annual festivals, often including yacht races and much waterborne hilarity. That is not to say that a visit in winter should be avoided- the annual festival of 'Up Helly Aa' at the end of January is an experience not to be missed. The riotous enthusiasm with which the ever-friendly Shetland Islanders share their annual celebration of Shetland history is likely to draw summer visitors back time and time again. Gordon Buchanan knows the Shetland Islands from visits over many years and presents detailed pilotage information on reaching and cruising this delightful area.

Lochs And Lights - The West Coast Of Mainland Scotland

Starting from the estuaries of Galloway on the Solway Firth, the tour leads northwards across the Firth of Clyde, taking in Ardnamurchan, Oban, Loch Linnhe, Mallaig and past Skye to reach the lonely and dramatic cliffs of Cape Wrath. Patrick Roach’s outstanding aerial photographs, taken in a typical range of weather and tidal conditions, are matched by a commentary and description by West coast based yachting journalist, Gordon Buchanan. These wonderful views from the air give an idea of the drama and variety in the long and complex Scottish coast, and for anyone at sea as well as walkers and other landside visitors, 'Lochs and Lights' is the ideal companion.
Hidden Harbours of South West Scotland
£8.95

Hidden Harbours of South West Scotland

BIM235
Hidden Harbours of Southwest Scotland is a lively tour of small and infrequently visited harbours on the stunning Scottish coast and its nearby islands, starting from Port Logan in the south and meandering northwards to Lerags on Loch Feochan in the Firth of Lorn. The southwest coast of Scotland is one of the most beautiful cruising areas in the world, combining dramatic scenery with interesting history and landmarks. Many of its shores are lined with old castles and the magnificent historical houses of rich industrialists, reflecting its significance as an area of busy trade. The more recent military developments, which include a wartime torpedo base at Loch Long and the naval headquarters at Faslane on Gare Loch, also have a significant presence. Small harbours further south were shaped by the trade in natural resources and the flow of passengers via Clyde Puffer boats to and from nearby cities such as Glasgow and beyond. Each hidden harbour, many of which are simple but attractive piers or shipways built to support trade, has a story to tell. The book includes a historical overview plus notes on what is to be found at each, alongside full colour photographs and annotated aerial shots. This edition complements the other Hidden Harbours titles in the series by Dag Pike.
Rites of Passage

Rites of Passage

BIM266

For some, sailing experience is measured through harbours visited and miles logged. But, certain stretches of water pose unique challenges and their reputations hold a strange power in the imagination of all who set sail. Completing one of these passages is an initiation, a rite of passage that leads to respect of others and a new self-confidence.

Yachting Monthly, the Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation and Imray have collated a dozen or so of the milestone passages through, around and across British waters that should be on every cruising sailor’s to-do list. The resulting Rites of Passage is an inspiring and informative book which will help all sailors, from those new to cruising to the much more experienced, reach those milestones.

With a nod to the 1980s book Classic Passages, and published as a series of abridged features in Yachting Monthly magazine from January 2019, the book includes expanded features, illustrated by photographs and pilotage information, about the passages and about the arrival cruising grounds including plans, tide diagrams and other key information.

Falmouth to Isles of Scilly (Sam Llewellyn)
Lulworth to Salcombe across Lyme Bay (Megan Clay)

Coastal Scotland

Coastal Scotland

BACB278

With several thousand miles of coastline and nearly 800 islands, Scotland has the most diverse coast of the United Kingdom. From the wild waters around Cape Wrath to the serene beaches of the Silver Sands of Morar, via one of the world's largest whirlpools at Corryvreckan, this new book journeys around the varied shorelines of Scotland to complete the most comprehensive survey ever taken.

Stuart Fisher, bestselling author of the similarly comprehensive Canals of Britain, visits all the places of interest along the entire coastline of Scotland: from rugged countryside edging the Highlands to modern cities, via firths and sea lochs, exploring history and heritage, striking architecture and dramatic engineering, wildlife, wonderful flora and fauna, art and literature.

His journey takes him from industrial hubs to small villages and fishing communities, providing a keen insight into what makes each stretch of Scotland's shoreline unique and special. Evocative and often dramatic colour photographs help capture the great variety of the coast, and maps, book covers, stamps and local artefacts help convey the character of each area.

This comprehensive and absorbing survey is a treasure trove of interest and knowledge for walkers, cyclists, boaters, holidaymakers and indeed anyone with an interest in coastal Scotland.
