This publication has been written by senior Nautical College lecturers who have responsibility for tanker elements of the Deck Officer academic requirements, as well as statutory and industry tanker training courses. This latest book by David House is an extensively illustrated work covering all aspects of ship design and construction. Continual changes in the history of ship design have been brought about by the needs of trade, class and legislation. This current work provides a glossary of shipyard terminology and shipboard elements up to the 21st century. The work shows detailed aspects of virtually all of today's shipping arms, inclusive of: Container and Roll-On Roll-Off vessels, Liquid Cargo tankers, Bulk Carriers, Passenger and Dry Cargo ships. Shipboard measurements, together with operational features are well illustrated and detailed throughout. The fore and aft, working ends of the vessel, with their anchors and mooring patterns are clearly depicted. All professional seafarers are required to have a minimum level of training in sea survival. Those charged with the responsibility to launch or recover survival craft and look after survivors are similarly required to have a minimum level of training and competence, as are those responsible for operating fast rescue boats. The training required to meet that level of knowledge and competence is carried out both ashore and in training facilities throughout the world all using the requirements from both SOLAS and the Standards of Training & Certification of Watchkeepers (STCW Code). The STCW Code lays out the minimum standards required for seafarers, covering a whole range of competencies – those for sea survival, the operation of both Survival Craft and Fast Rescue Boats are covered under the Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (CPSC & RB), and the Certificate of Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (FRB) elements of the Code.

Methods shown are simple and have been used by the author in correcting the compasses of small craft up to 70 tons. This chart gives every star contained in the Nautical Almanac whose declination does not exceed 70 degrees North or South. The principal Navigating Stars are printed in red, whilst the various constellations are very clearly described on the margins of the chart. At the back of the chart there has been printed a table containing Navigating Stars, giving the right ascension and declination of each.
