10 March 2008.  Irish Cruising Club publish the 11th edition, 2008, of the Sailing Directions for the East and North Coasts of Ireland. It has been totally rewritten by ICC editiuon Norman Kean. Using the latest desktop publishing software, he has re-drawn all the chartlets to include much greater detail than was shown before and by his use of additional colour has made them clearer and much easier to use. ICC member Kevin Dwyer's stunning aerial photographs are taken to provide the maximum perspective for navigators.  Price £36.50

03 January 2008. United Kindom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) add two further Tough Charts to the range.  SC5907 Thames Estuary and SC5908 Rivers and Harbours of the Thames Estuary are priced at £45.00 GBP each, with a discount of 10% for online orders.

What is a Tough Chart?
Developed in conjunction with the Royal Yachting Association, Tough Charts are fully waterproof and designed to be used on open or wet boats. They are A3 in size and spiral bound for convenience.

What does a Tough Chart Contain?
Each Tough Chart consists of around 20 main charts for a specific area as well as approach plans covering a number of popular harbours in the area. These are shown at larger scales. The main charts are based on the 1:75 000 scale charts of the area and are magnified for easier reading at speed.

Can I write on it?
There is a space to write notes on each of the main charts for quick reference. Tough Charts can be written on using either a pencil for temporary markings which can be removed with a non abrasive eraser or using a permanent pen for permanent markings.

What about keeping it up to date?
Even though they are waterproof, Tough Charts can be updated using Notices to Mariners (NMs). Textual updates can be applied directly to the product. To obtain a waterproof block NM, please e-mail helpdesk@ukho.gov.uk stating your requirement.

Coverage
Admiralty Tough Charts are available for areas which join neatly from Falmouth to Dungeness, The Thames, and also The Firth of Clyde.

20 December  2007: United Kingdom Hydrographic Office launch new Leisure Folio for Northern Ireland waters, from Carlingford Lough northwards to Lough Foyle.  This folio, code SC5612, contains all the charts in a convenient A2 size, for cruising the waters of the Ulster coast, including the passage from Belfast Lough to Portpatrick.  Tremendous value at £42.00, and save 10% when bought online.
